Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has revealed the tactical adjustment that played a decisive role in his team's 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the 10th round of La Liga.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese manager explained that he instructed Eduardo Camavinga to attack the spaces behind Barcelona's defensive line, believing that midfield runners would be more effective than traditional forwards.
"I told Camavinga to go and attack the space. It's difficult for forwards to attack and find space against Barcelona. The only solution is to do it with midfielders," Mourinho said.
The Real Madrid coach emphasized that Barcelona's defense was well prepared to deal with attacking players making runs behind the back line.
"When forwards make those runs, Barcelona's defense is ready and trained for it. The attackers either end up offside or Joan Garcia intercepts the dangerous pass," he explained.
Mourinho believes his decision to involve Camavinga and Jude Bellingham in attacking movements proved crucial.
"My solution was to use midfielders like Camavinga and Bellingham to break through that line, and it worked," he added.
The victory allowed Real Madrid to end Barcelona's nine-match winning streak in La Liga and hand their rivals their first league defeat of the season.
Real Madrid will next face Racing away from home on November 1, while Barcelona are scheduled to host Alaves on October 31.
